Prevention of Diabetic Foot with Tibial Artery Calcification Care

diabetic-foot-careOne of the main goals at our podiatry practice in Spring, TX is the prevention of diabetic foot complications. Now, we do that in many different ways. But studies now say we can help predict–and prevent–ulcers by paying attention to Tibial Artery Calcification. Let’s take a closer look.

Prevention of Diabetic Foot: the TAC Connection

Research suggests that patients with Type 2 diabetes are more susceptible to foot ulcers because of Tibial Artery Calcification (TAC). In fact, patients who developed these non-healing wounds were three times more likely to have a high TAC score than patients without any foot injuries. Publishing these results in Diabetes Research and Clinical Practiceresearcher Raul Guzman from Vanderbilt Medical Center said, “We believe that the clinical value of tibial artery calcification scoring may be in the identification of a group with high-risk, vulnerable patients with Type-2 diabetes who deserve more aggressive foot protection efforts.”

In other words, if clinicians monitor patients’ TAC scores, they could help prevent foot ulcers. At the very least, they could help with early detection and treatment. And that may prevent diabetic amputations.

Diabetic Foot Care in Spring TX

Diabetes affects millions of people of all ages each year. Diabetes damages blood vessels in many parts of the body, including the feet. When damage occurs to nerves in the feet, they may be unable to send the proper signals to the peripheral nervous system, resulting in a condition known as neuropathy. Once a diabetic patient develops neuropathy, it is imperative that the feet are well taken care of to avoid possible amputation of the feet.

Prevention of Diabetic Foot: The Importance of Home Care

– Regularly check your feet for bruises or sores.
– Wear socks that fit your feet; socks shouldn’t be tight.
– Wear properly fitting shoes that are comfortable.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their Hemoglobin A1C levels as this test lets the physician know how well the blood sugar levels have been controlled during the past 3 months. It is important to keep the blood sugar levels in a normal range (70-110mg/dl). It is advisable to visit a podiatrist if the diabetic patient is experiencing any conditions involving the feet.
