New House Makes Living Tough for Neuropathic Man

rafee-bakshA man named Rafee Baksh was moved out of his home in Ilford by the Redbridge Council and placed in a hostel in Forest Hills that he says he can’t use because he’s disabled. Baksh is restricted to the use of a wheelchair because his diabetic neuropathy makes him unable to walk. He claims that the Council told him the Forest Hills hostel would be adequate for him, but that the accommodations make it very hard for him to do everyday things like shower and use the toilet.

Baksh was moved out of his home in Ilford due to reasons involving an incident with his scooter that he used to get around. The Redbridge Council placed him in his new home as a temporary measure because there weren’t any houses made to accommodate the disabled available at the time.

For many people with systemic diseases, the feet can become vulnerable to complications. If you’re suffering from a foot condition and you suspect it’s a systemic disease, visit podiatrist Dr. Brad Bachmann of Louetta Foot and Ankle Specialists, P.A. Dr. Bachmann will diagnose your problem and instruct you on how to care for your feet.

Systemic Diseases

Systemic diseases affect the whole body, and symptoms usually are displayed in the feet. This condition can make a patient’s ability to walk unbearable. Systemic diseases include: gout, diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders, and arthritis.

Gout – is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Some common symptoms include pain, inflammation, and redness at the metatarsal/phalangeal joint of the base big toe. Gout can be treated by NSAIDs, which relieves pain and inflammation and other drugs which lowers the acid levels in the body.

Diabetes mellitus- is an increase in the level of blood sugar in which the body cannot counteract with the insulin in the body. When the body doesn’t produce enough insulin this is a factor in Diabetes.

Diabetes of the Feet

● Diabetic Neuropathy – may lead to damaged nerves and affect the feet through numbness and loss of sensation.
● Peripheral Vascular Disease- can restrict the blood flow to the feet, and often times lead to amputation of the feet.
