Are Crocs Good for Your Feet?
Crocs are a super popular kids’ shoe. And adults love them too. (Brooke Shields even rocked them at the 2024 Tony Awards while recovering from foot surgery.) Now, these rubber shoes are easy to slip on and off. And, at least in the short term, they may feel pretty comfortable. But are Crocs good for your feet? Here’s what you need to know!
Are Crocs Good for Your Feet?
Answering this question isn’t so simple. You see, our podiatrists in Spring and Tomball, TX know that wearing Crocs is a good choice for your feet…but only at certain times, or in certain locations.
Heading to the pool or beach? Feel free to wear your waterproof, closed-toe Crocs, since they can protect your toes from stubbing injuries, and keep fungus away from your toes when you’re walking across shared surfaces. Just be careful walking in slippery spaces, since the rubber soles don’t have much grip, and can lead to falls and injuries. And if you’re heading out for the day? Forget the Crocs and consider lacing up your sneakers. Because these rubber clogs are not meant as walking shoes. And here’s why.
When Crocs Go Wrong
One big problem with wearing Crocs all day is their loose fit. You see, even when you wear them with a strap on your heel, your feet slide around in the shoes. In turn, toes may grip to keep the shoes in place. And that can lead to foot pain, corns, calluses and blisters.
Additionally, these clogs are made from rubber, which doesn’t really breathe well. And that causes several problems. First, the material can trap moisture against your feet, increasing your risk for fungal infections such as athlete’s foot.
Furthermore, rubber is very flexible. So, are Crocs good for feet when they bend at the heel and arch? Unfortunately, not if you’re spending any significant amount of time in them, because that flexibility makes them less supportive. In turn, you may experience pain in the short term. Or, over time, you may develop chronic conditions such as the heel pain of plantar fasciitis if you spend too much time walking around in these shoes.
