New York Knicks lose Anunoby to Sprained Ankle
OG Anunoby is out of the game and listed as day-to-day for the New York Knicks because of a mild sprained ankle. He’d sustained the injury during a non-contact incident. Initially, doctors suspected a foot fracture. But after an MRI, the sprain was diagnosed. Still, despite the ‘mild’ designation, a sprained ankle requires medical attention to ensure proper healing.
What Causes a Sprained Ankle?
Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured. Thes include twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.
What are the Symptoms?
- Mild to moderate bruising
- Limited mobility
- Swelling
- Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)
How to Prevent a Sprained Ankle
Not all ankle injuries are preventable. But you can reduce your risk for sprains and strains by:
- Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
- Stretching before exercises and sports
- Knowing your limits can aid in prevention
Treatment and Prognosis
The way we treat your ankle sprain depends on the severity. Some people will just need to rest and remain off their feet completely, But others may be able to stay mobile with an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, you may need surgery.
If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.
