Massages and Pedicures Enhance Foot Health for Seniors
Licensed massage therapist, medical electrologist, and freelance beauty writer Theresa George says that pampering the feet with messages and pedicures is a good health practice for seniors. The elderly are sometimes unable to properly care for their lower extremities, but trimming nails and scanning for problems are important routines.
“Many seniors can’t see their feet as well as they used to and pedicures give us the chance to look for problems like broken toes, cracked, bleeding skin, thickening of toenails, ingrown toenails and nail fungus,” said Julie Defelice, district manager at Salon PS. “The massage part of the pedicure enables us to check to see if the client is getting enough circulation to the foot and lower extremities.”
The elderly often have trouble taking care of their feet, and are therefore more susceptible to certain conditions. If you know someone who needs help with footcare, consider a podiatrist like Dr. Brad Bachmann, DPM of Louetta Foot and Ankle Specialists, P.A. Dr. Bachmann will provide quality care to keep feet healthy and happy.
The Elderly and their Feet
As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly. There are many complications that can lead to serious issues, if the problem is not taken care of right away.
Common Conditions
Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet, and can hide many life threating medical conditions.
Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
Shoes that don’t fit properly
Pressure sores
Loss of circulation in legs & feet
Edema & swelling of feet and ankles
Injuries left unnoticed
Insect or pet bites can also become inflamed and infected
