Botched Foot Surgery Can Lead to Revisions

foot-surgery2General Hospital star Kin Shriner needed rehab and a second procedure after botched foot surgery left him immobile. The initial procedure was meant to treat his foot arthritis. Unfortunately, surgery went poorly, and the actor couldn’t walk until his good friend John Stamos referred him to another surgeon who performed revision surgery. Now in physical therapy, Shriner is working at regaining his mobility.

If you’re considering surgery, you should carefully vet your surgeon. Our team of podiatric surgeons are experienced and ready to provide a consultation or second opinion.

When is Foot Surgery Necessary?

An invasive procedure is usually required when regular therapy has proven to be ineffective. You may also need to surgically repair a fractured foot if the injury is unstable or displaced.  Surgeons often use foot surgery as a last resort because of its invasive nature. In many cases, physical rehabilitation, medication, rest, exercise, and casts can help to heal a foot injury without invasive procedures.

However, sometimes you may need to have surgery, even if you haven’t sustained an injury. Like Kin Shriner, some patients with foot arthritis need surgery to improve their mobility. These procedures can also correct a deformity like a bunion or hammer toe, usually when conservative treatments like padding, strapping or custom orthotics have failed.  When performed correctly, surgery will improve the quality of your feet and help you return to your daily life.
