What Works on Cracked Heels

heighhealsWondering what works for cracked heels? There are several different ways to heal severely dry, cracked foot skin. And this post will help you choose your best option. But first, let’s explore why you develop problems in the first place.

What Causes Cracked Heels?

When the skin on your feet gets very dry, it can develop cracks. Dry skin can happen for many reasons. Some people with diabetes are more likely to have dry skin. And, in the winter, dry air and forced heat can make drying worse. Left alone, dry feet will crack, and that can leave you open to infection.

Now, dry skin is the number one culprit in creating cracked heels. But it’s not the only one. Many athletes, walkers, joggers, and even swimmers suffer from cracked heels. Age and skin oil production also play a role in your risk for cracked heels.

What Works on Cracked Heels? Home Remedy Ideas

Vinegar, while typically used as a cooking ingredient, is very useful in remedying dry and cracked heels. One part of white vinegar, when mixed with two parts of warm water, can be used as a soak for the feet.

A pumice stone can be used to scrub the dead skin after soaking for 20-25 minutes. Mixing white vinegar with curd creates a solution that removes dead skin while filling in the cracks. White vinegar can also be mixed to warm water and sheer or cocoa butter to create a mixture that can be rubbed onto the heels.

Apple cider vinegar is another type of vinegar that is useful against cracked heels, and when mixed with two parts warm water can create another soak for the feet to remedy dry skin.

Promote Healing

Over-the-counter medicines can help, especially for those that need instant relief, or for those who suffer from chronic dry feet.

Wear Socks – wearing socks with medicated creams, helps lock in moisture so it can stay on longer.

Moisturizers – applying it both day and night will help alleviate dryness which causes cracking.

Pumice Stones – these remove dead skin, and then you can massage cream onto your foot. This way the cream will be absorbed. The skin needs to be exfoliated; therefore the outer layer dead skin needs removal.
